Welcome aboard the Aquarium’s research vessel Oceanic!

Sail the waters of Norwalk Harbor and Long Island Sound with the Aquarium’s marine science educators to learn about life at the shores and below the surface of the Sound.

Winter Creature Cruise
No cruises scheduled at this time
The seasonal seal population in Long Island Sound has been increasing over the last few years, and although we don't quite know why, The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk's Winter Creature Cruises are part of the attempt to find out. Cruise with Aquarium educators in hopes of spying some of the growing numbers of seals that winter in Long Island Sound. Observe science in action, and have a memorable experience at the same time!

The seals can often be observed at low tide, when they "haul out" to rest on exposed rocks. Aquarium educators will also point out winter waterfowl and talk about the population changes that occur in the Sound over the winter. Departure times for the approximately 2 1/2-hour cruises vary by low tide.

Bring binoculars, and dress warmly. Cost: $20.50 ($18 for members). Charters are $300, available Mon.-Fri. All passengers must be over 42" tall.

Biodiversity Database

What is Biodiversity? Biodiversity refers to the number of different species found in a specific area or habitat. The TMA biodiversity database is a compilation of information (data) that is recorded from the various field programs going on at TMA. This includes visits to the seashore, coastal studies, and the R/V Oceanic. The data is made available so that scientists, teachers, students and the public can have access to this information for use for scientific and academic purposes. It is also a record of the biotic and abiotic factors in Long Island Sound that affect the biodiversity and a means of documenting change.
