Celebrate the ocean’s gentle giants during these special focus days. At learning stations throughout the Aquarium, students can:
• participate in hands-on activities to learn how whales feed. Do all whales have teeth? No! Learn about the different feeding techniques used by baleen and toothed whales.
• experience the insulating properties of blubber. How do whales keep warm in the cold ocean waters? Discover the many benefits of blubber for yourself with this fun experiment.
• handle whale and whaling artifacts. See artifacts used by Yankee whalers long ago, as well as technology that is still used by sailors today.
• focus on the long yearly migration of right whales. Many types of whales participate in long yearly migrations. Using a magnetic board, students follow the right whale’s annual migration route along the Atlantic coastline of North America.
• try their hand at tying knots and scrimshaw. Being “knotty” is so nice! See examples of the many unique knots used by mariners, then try tying them yourself. Make a “sailor’s bracelet” of your very own to take home with you. Sailors also passed time at sea crafting unique art using the teeth or bones of the whales they hunted. See examples of this traditional art, then create your own faux “scrimshaw” artwork.
Note: There is an additional $2 fee per person for entrance into the Aquarium during these days.
“Spotlight on Whales” is a perfect tie-in with the “Whales” IMAX movie.
