Maritime Aquarium Summer Camp

Starts June 22   /    Ages 6-15

Article-images-Classroom3Each week is a hands-on adventure with learning activities in our marine-science classrooms, at spectacular marine exhibits, in our bigger-than-life educational IMAX® movies, and for program excursions on our special new research vessel. We’ll show them the fun side of scientific inquiry. Imagine your children doing experiments, holding a real whale bone, safely handling live crabs and much more! Specific activities, including beach days and field trips, depend upon the particular theme of the session.

To participate, your child must be the listed age by the start of the program. Specific activities and visits to certain Aquarium exhibits depend upon the particular theme of each session. Each day runs from 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (Except FOR Teen Apprentice which runs 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.)

Jr. Marine Biologist 1
July 6 -10 & July 27-31  (Ages 9-12)

Campers enter the inner workings of The Maritime Aquarium. Their goal for the week: set up, stock, and maintain an aquarium with live animals. Campers learn about water chemistry and use scientific probes to monitor water quality. They grow brine shrimp to feed their animals, dissect squid and fish, and use microscopes to view the unseen world of Long Island Sound. Open house for parents Friday afternoon.

 

Jr. Aquarist
July 20-24  (Ages 6-8)

Young scientists will dive into marine biology and the inner-workings of the aquarium through this exciting new week-long program. Children will have daily hands-on experiences with animals including turtles, horseshoe crabs and sea stars. They’ll meet one of our expert seal trainers and attend a private feeding. They’ll play a variety of aquarium-themed games and participate in hands-on-activities, including making an enrichment toy to present to an aquarium animal. Finally, with tools in hand, campers will take a trip to a local beach to help us collect live animals for the Education Department’s touch tanks.

 

Shark Safari
July 6-10 & July 27-31  (Ages 6-8)

It’s The Maritime Aquarium’s very own version of Shark Week, and it’s a lot more exciting than anything you can see on TV! Campers will go behind-the–scenes to see a private feeding of the large sharks in our Open-Ocean tank. They’ll watch our Dive Team swim within arms length of huge sand tiger sharks and then have a meet-and-greet with the divers and make shark-tooth necklaces from teeth they’ve collected from the tank floor. To top it all off, campers will see the IMAX film Great White Shark in our theater, visit our shark and ray touch pool, and have a private encounter with chain cat sharks in an aquarium classroom. This new program is sure to sell out quickly, so register today!

Campers learn fundamentals of scientific research by conducting experiments focused on aquatic animals, their behaviors and adaptations for survival. In groups, campers design and carry out a week-long research project, and also participate in a multi-day advanced dissection. Open house for parents Friday afternoon. Special 9 a.m. start time on Wednesday for cruise on Aquarium’s new research vessel. Campers must participate in Jr. Marine Biologist 1 before taking this program.

 

Wacky Science
July 13-17  (Ages 6-8)

Campers will “ooh” and “aah” at the wacky activities in this week-long laboratory of science fun. They’ll dive into the world of chemical and physical sciences as they create hovercrafts out of household supplies and make and launch pop rockets. These and other wacky projects and experiments will be interspersed among visits to the aquarium’s newest exhibits – Dragons and Butterflies, – meeting live animals up-close-and-personal, and an IMAX film. Campers will also learn about the physics and chemistry of diving from members of the aquarium’s Dive Team, and watch them in action as they dive with large sharks in our Open Ocean tank. Special 9 a.m. start time on Wed. for a cruise aboard the Aquarium’s new research vessel.

 

Research Vessel Oceanography
July 20-24 (sold out!)  & August 17-21 (Ages 9-12)

The Maritime Aquarium’s innovative new research vessel, RV Spirit of the Sound™, will be the centerpiece of this program debuting in summer of 2015. Young oceanographers will take multiple trips on the water. They’ll work with our crew to operate trawl nets and dredges as they participate in collection of live animals for the aquarium’s collection. They’ll also take turns at the controls as our remotely operated vehicle explores the sea floor in search of shipwrecks. They’ll learn how to read and navigate using nautical maps and charts and use a variety of oceanography tools to collect samples and data from a variety of depths and micro-habitats. For a tween or young teen interested in the marine world, this will be an unmatched opportunity for experiential learning.

 

Sound Arts
August 3-7 & 17-21  (Ages 6-8)

Back by popular demand, this week-long camp is a unique and engaging combination of art and science education! Young artists will tour the aquarium before the crowds arrive and choose an animal to sketch in preparation for creating their own clay sculpture. They’ll make ghostly seaweed impressions and fish prints and visit our Dragons and Butterflies exhibits as an inspiration for their own ocean collage. Finally, campers will receive instruction in watercolor techniques as they paint the river scape alongside the aquarium. Campers will also watch an IMAX movie before presenting their artistic creations at an open house for parents on Friday afternoon.

 

Jr. Marine Biologist 3
August 10-14 &  17-21  (Ages 11-14)

Discover the excitement and the possibilities of field research. We’ll take field trips to coastline, river and woodland areas, collecting biology samples during each. We’ll also talk about career opportunities in the field sciences. Early Drop-offs required Tues., Wed. & Thurs. for field trips. This session involves time outside, so campers should dress for all weather. Campers must participate in Jr. Marine Biologist 1 & 2 before taking this program.

 

Ocean Explorers
August 10-14  (Ages 6-8)

From icy polar seas to tropical coral reefs, Earth’s oceans are made up of an astounding array of habitats and a dizzying variety of creatures that inhabit them. And there aren’t many places in the country where you can see as many of them as at The Maritime Aquarium! In this week-long camp, explorers will focus each day on a different marine habitat. The exploration will include hands-on experiences with live sharks, crabs and sea stars, an IMAX® movie, a bird-watching expedition along the Norwalk River, and a trip to a local beach to collect live animals for the Aquarium’s touch tanks.


Pre registration is required. No walk-up sales.

Pre-care from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Extended care is until 5:30 p.m. A relaxed, informal care service includes enrichment science activities, games, crafts, educational movies and visits to Aquarium exhibits.

As a Connecticut State-certified camp, we require health exam forms for every camper. Campers bringing medications (inhalers, epi-pens,etc) require an authorization of medication form for each medication.

 

Financial Assistance

If you qualify for the School Lunch Program, you qualify for subsidy for a summer session. Financial Aid is available for one session per child.
