Sand Tiger Shark Fun Fact

Look closely at the sand tiger sharks in the "Ocean Beyond the Sound" exhibit. Their snout and jaws are covered in tiny holes. These are receptors for the sharks' "sixth sense" – their ability to detect bioelectric fields emitted by other animals (including potential prey).

Hoist Ale on Saturday evenings in October as The Maritime Aquarium offers special Octoberfest Cruises featuring tastings from local craft breweries. The adults-only cruises will showcase different Connecticut breweries each Saturday. Sample and enjoy their flagship and seasonal brews, while taking in the gorgeous sights on Long Island Sound.

Participants must be at least 21 years old.

Study marine biodiversity from the water's surface down to the bottom for a first-hand understanding of Long Island Sound's interdependent marine life. We utilize such sampling techniques as a plankton tow, trawl net and biodredge that generally bring up a variety of fish, crabs, mollusks and more right before your eyes!

Veterans Weekend Touch-a-Truck

The Maritime Aquarium welcomes two military vehicles, which will be open for exploration and photos, Nov. 11 & 12 for Veterans Day Weekend Military Touch-A-Truck.

Sit inside a 1950 M38 Jeep and a 1987 Humvee (HMMWV) during the special visits. You can even pop a helmet on for a photo!

Turkeyfish/Invasive Species Weekend

On the weekend before Thanksgiving, The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk turns its attention to invasive species – in particular, a striking but troublesome fish nicknamed the “turkeyfish.”

Because their long venomous spines look something like a male turkey displaying its plumage, lionfish have the nickname of “turkeyfish.” So as we begin thinking ahead to turkey dinners, The Maritime Aquarium is declaring Sat., Nov. 18 & Sun., Nov. 19 to be “Turkeyfish Weekend.”

Santa Claus will join The Maritime Aquarium’s dive team to demonstrate that sharks aren’t the blood-thirsty killers of myth. He'll strap on scuba gear and enter the Aquarium’s 110,000-gallon “Ocean Beyond the Sound” exhibit as part of our regular program that lets Aquarium guests see and talk with volunteer divers swimming in the exhibit.
