Internships - The Best Possible Schooling!

Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Student Internships
at The Maritime Aquarium

Thinking of a career in marine science? The Maritime Aquarium has year-round internship opportunities for high school and college students.

For high school students, an internship is a perfect introduction to biology and the challenges of working with live animals in an aquarium. Often college students can receive course credit, fulfill degree requirements and gain valuable practical experience by working as an Aquarium intern. Previous interns have gone on to full-time jobs at The Maritime Aquarium, Sea World, Mystic Aquarium, Georgia Aquarium, Scripps Institute and other aquariums, as well as careers in related fields like veterinary medicine.

What Interns Do

Most Maritime Aquarium college interns work with aquarists, but internships are available to work with education, development and marketing staff.

Work with aquarists in the Animal Husbandry Department to care for the Aquarium's animals. This includes food preparation, feeding, tank maintenance and more.

Help Aquarium educators design and develop programs.
Assist Aquarium educators teaching school groups both in classrooms and in the field.
Work "on the floor" at the seal pool, Touch Tank, and other exhibits sharing their knowledge of marine animals with visitors of all ages (and gaining valuable interpersonal communication experience at the same time).
Work on school research projects coordinated by their own school if resources are available in the Aquarium.
Qualifications
You must be at least 16 years old.
Internships may occur over a school semester or during summer break. Tailored to meet school/student requirements.
Applicants must have an interest in biology or Long Island Sound. A background in biology and relevant sciences is helpful. Priority is given to college students or students completing internship for academic credit.
Applicants must be capable of handling the paperwork and entire application process on their own.
