Sound Scientists - Summer Camp/08
Grades 1-4
Inspire your child when science comes to life at The Maritime Aquarium’s summer camp. Our programs are firmly grounded in National Education Standards for life science learning. With a summer’s day, week or more at the Aquarium, your children aspire to achieve in school next fall. We’ll take your child beyond the books with an exciting, hands-on adventure. We show them the fun side of scientific inquiry. Imagine your child doing experiments, holding a real whale bone, handling crabs, netting shrimp at the beach, growing live animals, and so much more!
To participate your child must be entering
grade 1 thru 4 in the Fall of 2008.
Specific activities, beach days, and Aquarium exhibits vary by session; outdoor activities are weather-dependent. Choose topics and activities your child will most enjoy. Sign up for a few sessions or attend all summer!

Each day runs from 8:30 a.m. - 2 p.m.; extended care until 5:30 p.m. is available for all sessions.

Extended Care All Sessions
A relaxed, informal care service until 5:30 p.m. includes enrichment science activities, games, crafts, movies,
outside river walks and visits to Aquarium exhibits.

The CT Department of Health requires that The Maritime Aquarium has on file for each camper a medical form signed by a physician. Each camper must have had a physical exam in the past three years. A sample form is provided below - other forms that provide the same information will also be accepted.”

One Day Programs for Grades 1-4
Ancient Sea Monsters
Wednesday, June 25

Junior paleontologists simulate a fossil dig, find and identify ancient marine fossils and solve a sea animal mystery. Capped off by the educational and entertaining National Geographic “Sea Monsters” IMAX movie, where fossils come to life.

Young Like Me
Thursday, June 26

Children study young animals in our exhibits, learning how they grow into adults. They use a plankton net off our dock to catch small animals, and by using a microscope figure out what their adult form will be.

Ocean World
Friday, June 27

Our summer scientists reach beyond Long Island Sound to explore ocean habitats from icy polar seas to warm coral reefs to our deepest oceans. Involves the Aquarium’s live animal exhibits.

Real Pirates
Tuesday, July 1

Pirates are popular! Your children study the real pirates of Long Island Sound. They learn how to tie sailor knots, make a knot bracelet, use a compass to find treasure, and build a model pirate ship to take home.

Coastal Critters
Wednesday, July 2

Our Sound Scientists roll up their sleeves to experience first-hand the animals living along our coasts. They learn to group shelled animals, measure a horseshoe crab just like a real scientist, then create experiments with crabs and snails.

One Week Programs for Grades 1-4
Planet Protectors
July 7-11

Bestow new appreciation for our “blue planet” and your child’s role in it. By creating simulated “pollution” then “cleaning” it up, campers see how choices we make in own backyards affect Long Island Sound. Science games and simulations help children understand environmental issues. They face challenges of hatchling sea turtles, examine the impact of an invasive crab species and study effects of global warming.

Sound Art & Science
Aug. 11-15

Delight your child’s creative side. Campers photograph live animals in our exhibits and up close too. They hand-build clay creations and models. We teach them to make fish prints and press live seaweeds from specimens collected during a beach exploration. On a river walk, they paint a “riverscape.” A unique combination of science education and multimedia art experiences.

Water Wonders
Aug. 18-22

Water, water everywhere! Hosted by The Maritime Aquarium and Stepping Stones Museum for Children, campers experience exciting hands-on activities at two museums. They discover the amazing properties of water through experiments and demonstrations. Children also learn about creatures that live under and around wet, watery worlds including live rainforest insects and exotic frogs. River walks and beach exploration bring it all home to Long Island Sound, our own watery backyard.

Two Week Programs for Grades 1&2
Otterly Awesome Animals
July 14-25

Introduce your children to frisky otters, sleek seals and giant whales. Our junior scientists come face-to-face with the Aquarium’s otters, attend a special seal-feeding and see how they measure up to a whale by holding actual whale bones, then assembling a life-sized humpback puzzle! They conduct “blubber” and “feeding” experiments. Includes beach days for recreation with a science twist.

Sharks & Fish
July 28 – Aug. 8

Offer your youngster an introduction to marine science in an age appropriate program. They have so much fun interacting with the Aquarium’s live collection and teaching aides, their minds soak up the science. We teach them what makes a fish a fish and if sharks are fish. They touch live rays, count teeth in real shark jaws and observe fish behavior. Campers get a behind-the-scenes peek to see where we care for and feed our friends with fins. Includes recreational beach days with a learning component.

Two Week Programs for Grades 3&4
Junior Marine Biologists
July 14-25 or
July 28 – Aug. 8
Parents, inspire a career here! We invite your children into the inner workings of our Aquarium. Their eventual goal: set-up, stock, feed and maintain a group aquarium display of Long Island Sound marine life in a healthy, sustainable habitat. Campers grow their own fish food to sustain their collection. They explore a local beach and river, learn animal collection techniques and conduct field and lab experiments.
