Horseshoe-Crab Tagging

A free training session includes basics you will need as a volunteer to count and tag the crabs on the new and full moons of June at low tide (June 3 and 18). A “Citizen Scientist” program invites you to learn more about the crabs with an interpretive program and includes a chance to tag horseshoe crabs.

Horseshoe Crab Citizen Scientist, Sun., May 18 at 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The Maritime Aquarium invites you to be a “citizen scientist” in an exciting new series of programs focusing on marine science and the environment. Our May program invites participants to help with a Long Island Sound horseshoe-crab tagging program. Start out in an Aquarium classroom, learning about horseshoes crabs and their anatomy, plus their importance in our coastal ecosystem. Educators also will explain the ongoing horseshoe crab census being conducted in the Sound, and demonstrate how to tag one of these prehistoric-looking (but harmless) creatures. Then it’s off to a local beach for a tagging session with horseshoe crabs we find. You must be at least 10 years old to participate. Cost is $20 per person (Aquarium members save $2) or $35 for two (Aquarium members save $5). Advance registration required. Call (203) 852-0700, ext. 2206.
