On behalf of the nation's leading aquariums and zoos, we thank the Biden-Harris administration for fully restoring protections for the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts, the U.S. Atlantic Ocean’s only marine national monument. The Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument is a biodiversity hot-spot, home to a diverse array of wildlife, including endangered sperm whales, sea turtles, swordfish, sharks, and colorful deep-sea corals, some of which are estimated to be centuries old. The high biodiversity is due to the spectacular geologic features of this area – canyons deeper than the Grand Canyon and seamounts higher than any mountains east of the Rockies. All of this richness is found within the boundaries of an area representing just 1.5% of the U.S. Atlantic exclusive economic zone.
Today’s action will ensure that this valuable ocean area is more resilient in a rapidly changing climate, continues to provide a refuge for threatened, endangered and protected species, and creates a natural laboratory for scientists to study the impacts of climate change. Our marine monuments are national treasures that protect unique and significant natural resources on behalf of all Americans. They have been designated and expanded by both Republican and Democratic Presidents who recognized the need to conserve special places in the ocean important to our national heritage, similar to how we have protected these areas on land. The nation’s marine monuments cover some of the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth, including coral reefs teeming with life, dramatic deep-sea canyons, and towering seamounts. They are places of pride as distinctive as the forests, canyons, freshwater, and other unique terrestrial ecosystems protected in our National Parks. Choosing to protect such places is a sign of U.S. strength and leadership.
We thank you for ensuring that the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts National Marine Monument remains fully protected as an example of remarkable public resources protected in trust for all people.
